Recipient of Leadership Award for Providing Exemplary Healthcare Services to People with Developmental Disabilities

Stephen Sulkes, M.D. Director of the University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the University of Rochester Medical Center

A busy clinician, board certified in developmental/behavioral pediatrics, neurodevelopmental disabilities and pediatrics, Dr. Stephen Sulkes is also director of the University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities in University of Rochester Medical Center's division of Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. He also directs the interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program and the UR Fellowship program in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics. His primary research interest is in health care delivery to people with developmental disabilities throughout the lifetime.

During a pediatric resident rotation, Dr. Sulkes was struck by what patients with developmental disabilities were capable of when given the opportunities."The experience cemented my commitment to working with this population and taught me about the fundamental humanity of those we serve and the amazing things that families can do," Sulkes said.

Dr. Sulkes works toward giving those with developmental disabilities the same opportunities for high quality health care in the same settings everyone else has. He aims to provide equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of community life. "And to help kids enjoy health care environments by having fun with them," Sulkes said.

Dr. Sulkes organized the recent Healthy Athletes Train-the- Trainer event, was trained as a Clinical Director, and has committed to improving and expanding the effort nationally.
He received his BA in Medical Science and his MD from Boston University. He interned and completed his residency at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and then completed his
fellowship in developmental pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital
